Employee Matching Gift Programs

Did you know that corporations gave more than $21 billion to nonprofits in 2022?

Corporate donations to charitable organizations are becoming more and more commonplace. Corporations benefit as there are significant tax advantages, and their employees appreciate company donations to charities. Donations are increasingly replacing holiday gifts to customers and suppliers at the end of the year. Companies send out holiday cards to their partners explaining that instead of a gift, they have donated an appropriate amount to one or more charitable organizations.

Employees want to be involved in the company’s giving decisions too, so many corporations have moved to a matching gift program where they donate to causes their employers care about through matching dollar-for-dollar donations. Most importantly for the corporations is that they no longer have to decide to support or not support individual causes, decisions that might upset customers or employees. Rather their donations are automatically directed towards causes that their employees care enough about to support themselves:

  • Is it the current climate crisis?

  • Is it poverty, education and health, particularly in the global south?

  • Is it risks of new pandemics or the dangers of unregulated artificial intelligence?

  • Is it animal welfare?

  • Or is it the continued decline of maritime habitats?

The top 10 companies that participate in matching programs donate over $2 billion annually through these programs, with 91% of those companies match donations at a 1:1 ratio.

Want to help The Next Swell?

Increasing revenue with matching gifts isn’t too tricky, but we need our donors’ help. Last year we received three matching gifts, which helped us raise nearly $400. We think that many of our donors didn’t know about their employer’s matching program and we could have raised significantly more. As we are looking forward to this year’s Giving Tuesday and holiday donation period, we’ve set a goal of raising at least $5,000 from these programs.

If we meet our goal, we’ll have funded and entire additional scholarship that we could provide to one of the many excellent student scholars who apply for our program each year. You can help us reach this goal by searching for your own match-eligibility. Immediately assess your eligibility and gain access to detailed information about your employer’s corporate giving program by searching our database of companies with matching gift programs https://www.thenextswell.org/gift-match.

Our contact information is below (Tax ID, address, fundraising contact) which you may need for your matching gift request:

  • Tax ID / EIN — 85-0539366

  • Address — 900 Fort Street Mall, STE 1680, Honolulu, HI 96813

  • Fundraising Contact — Kevin Groves, Treasurer; Kevin@thenextswell.org

If your company isn’t listed, make sure to check with your company’s HR department. It’s possible that your employer offers matching gifts and we just don’t know about it yet! We wish we could submit the required form for you, but unfortunately the employee must submit the matching gift request to their employer directly. We appreciate you taking a few minutes to make your donation twice as impactful!
