<image:caption>Eileen's research focuses on the recovery of endangered pinto abalone in Washington State. She is working with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife and Puget Sound Restoration Fund in an effort to discover why some of the restoration sites where they outplant juvenile abalone from the hatchery have a high success rate, and others are unsuccessful. Here, Eileen is deploying an array of oceanographic loggers at one of the abalone restoration sites in an effort to determine if small-scale differences in habitat and water conditions may impact where abalone are struggling and where they are thriving.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Sam is currently working on an honors project involving the application of the risk allocation hypothesis to an estuarine minnow Fundulus heteroclitus that is common along the east coast of North America. He is looking at this minnow's behavioral response to various levels of predation by assessing its willingness to leave an artificial oyster reef habitat in order to forage. During the summer of 2020, he participated in Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences virtual Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program. He worked on determining the behavioral response of copepod Calanus finmarchicus to crude oil spills. Copepods are zooplankton that are essential to nearly every marine food web. This study showed that this Arctic and vertical migratory copepod cannot avoid the detrimental effects of crude oil, which shows the ever-present need for proper oil cleanup equipment, proper maintenance on machinery, and legislation to protect marine life.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Wendy is a third year Ph.D. student at the University of California, Santa Cruz in the Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Department with a Designated Emphasis in Coastal Science & Policy. Wendy is collaborating with NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service, NOAA’s Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, and the Multi-Agency Rocky Intertidal Network (MARINe) to examine the impacts of the 2020 California fires and subsequent rains on the rocky intertidal endangered black abalone (Haliotis cracherodii) populations along the central California coast. Her studies monitor how increased sediment influxes from debris flows and mudslides can impact populations and habitats. This examination pivoted to rescue, husbandry, and relocation efforts when many areas of the Big Sur’s rocky intertidal coast were inundated by sediment from debris flows in January 2021, burying large areas of habitat and stranding many black abalone far from the new waterline. She is continuing to track the success of the relocation efforts and to monitor the ongoing sediment changes to the coast through the use of drones. Read more about these efforts here.</image:caption>

<image:title>Scholarship Winners 2025 - Dani - Graduate student at the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa</image:title>
<image:caption>Dani’s interdisciplinary research focuses on understanding modern and historic changes in shark nursery habitat in Hilo Bay, Hawai'i. Through the documentation of local ecological knowledge from the Hilo Bay fishing community, Dani was able to reconstruct baseline estimates of shark abundance in the bay over the past 75 years. To better understand the current population dynamics, Dani employed a paired-sampling approach which included a catch survey alongside environmental DNA (eDNA) collection. The eDNA collected from seawater in Hilo Bay was analyzed using species-specific primers for both Scalloped Hammerhead and Blacktip sharks to elucidate which species are currently utilizing the nursery habitat. Dani is now in the final stages of analysis, melding the qualitative, catch, and eDNA data to piece together the history of shark nursery habitat in Hilo Bay, and is excited to share her findings in her upcoming manuscripts!</image:caption>

<image:title>Grant Winners - Anna - Graduate student at University of Colorado, Boulder</image:title>
<image:caption>Anna studies how parasites and diseases shape marine ecosystems. Her PhD research focuses on an emerging parasitic infection known as Black Spot Syndrome, which affects important herbivorous fish species on Caribbean coral reefs. These fish, such as surgeonfish and parrotfish, play a crucial role in maintaining reef health by controlling algal growth. Through scuba-based field surveys around the reefs of Curaçao, Anna is investigating how this infection may alter fish behavior, and how such changes could ultimately impact coral reef ecosystems at a broader scale. The results of this research will provide meaningful insights into the fields of marine disease ecology and coral reef conservation.</image:caption>

<image:title>Scholarship Winners 2024 - Jun - Graduate student at Oregon State University</image:title>
<image:caption>Jun is studying the mechanism of coral bleaching. His work uses cellular and molecular techniques to evaluate thermal tolerance in coral larvae and the tropical sea anemone Aiptasia, a model organism for studying coral-algal symbiosis. His project aims to understand how climate change affects the growth and development of corals. These studies will contribute to a deeper understanding of coral bleaching phenomena, helping to inform decisions on conservation and management to better protect endangered coral reefs. In addition to his research, Jun also conducts outreach at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) to educate the public about the importance of mitigating climate change and coral bleaching.</image:caption>

<image:title>Scholarship Winners 2024 - Paul - Graduate student at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, College of William & Mary</image:title>
<image:caption>Paul is a doctoral student studying lesser-known sharks and bony fish in the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian oceans. He is trained as a shark taxonomist and has discovered over a dozen new species of sharks which has led him in leading shark identification workshops and developing training material for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. During his PhD he is expanding his research to include genetic barcoding, environmental DNA (eDNA), and cyber taxonomy. He plans to continue to work with commercial fishers, researchers, and fishery organizations to develop ways to improve the quality and quantity of data collected on lesser-known species in order to provide managers with the information that they need to better protect our living marine resources.</image:caption>
